
IHS Technology and LEDinside both predict 2015 will be a successful year for LED lighting manufacturers. This is due to the new technologies, like the patented innovations in our Parking Lights and Top Lights, that are evolving in the industry.
What should you be paying attention to this year? We recommend the following areas.
Lower Costs
Customers are often selecting LED lighting based on retail price. Judy Lin reports for LEDinside that “standard and mid-power LEDs with good C/P ratio often meet these LED lighting products lower price demands, for instance 3030 and 2835 LEDs have become mainstream on the market.”
Thinner, Lighter LEDs
Due to the current trend toward thinner smartphones, manufacturers are working with create thinner LEDs to use as backlights, as well. 04.t and 06t LEDs are currently the slimmest available to mass-produced products.
Li-Fi
A way to transmit data through light, Li-Fi is being considered for several applications since it doesn’t interfere with radio signals and gives off no harmful radiation. One possible application IHS discusses is that Li-Fi streams cannot move through walls, so may be very intriguing to those concerned with security breaches.
LED Use in Automotives
As product prices have fallen, LEDinside reports that the use of LED lights in automotive headlights such as Daytime Running Lights and high/low beam lights has spread from high-class models to middle-class models.
QD-Enhanced Displays
IHS describes QD-enhanced displays as having “backlight [that is] produced by conventional LEDs and filtered through a layer of quantum dots.” The dots, which are semiconductor crystals, produce colors when lit, and can be manufactured to produce any color. This results in “superior color” and higher efficiency. IHS predicts QD-LEDs are next, where the dots themselves are used as the light source.
LED Filament Bulbs
Data available to IHS shows that household consumers are using halogen lamps rather than LED bulbs simply because halogen has more of a resemblance to incandescent bulbs. However, new LED filament bulbs have “rows of tiny LEDs on a glass substrate” that is “covered in yellow phosphor to convert the originally blue light into white.”
Use in Televisions
While high-end televisions are moving towards increased LED brightness with the advent of 4K2K panels and NTSC 100, LEDinside sees reduced LED usage volumes for other classes of televisions. This is due to a drive to reduce costs.
Since street lights are a large, but necessary expense, to municipalities, IHS points out, governments are often on the lookout for solutions. One such solution is lights that dim themselves when no persons are near, or networked lights that can controlled remotely.
Small Pitch Displays
In order to replace the saturated market of large LED displays, which isn’t expected to see growth from major sporting events, LEDinside believes the market will concentrate on new technologies such as small pitch displays.
Cloud-Based Smart Lighting
As cloud computing expands, companies are looking to add smart controls such as dimming and automation to their building lighting systems through remote control made possible by the cloud. Companies with a large number of facilities to control are especially interested in this option to be able to control energy consumption.
LED Continues to Advance
LED lighting continues to provide opportunities for radical changes in the operation of businesses in all industries. It’ll be exciting to see where LED takes us in the future.
